The CIRCOPAV Project (https://circopav.com/) is a Doctoral Training Network (DN) funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe initiative. Its primary aim is to drive a paradigm shift in road infrastructure by developing Circular and Connected Pavements for Carbon-Neutral and Digitalised Roads.

This ambitious project brings together a world-class international, inter-disciplinary, and inter-sectoral consortium comprising 8 universities, 8 industrial companies, and a road administration across 8 countries and 3 continents. It combines expertise from transportation, construction engineering, sustainability, electronics, and data science sectors.

CIRCOPAV focuses on two main scientific pillars:

  1. Smart and Connected Pavements: This involves integrating digital technologies, sensors, and data analytics to create resilient, automated road networks for real-time monitoring, maintenance, and enhanced safety.
  2. Climate Neutral and Resilient Pavements: This pillar focuses on mitigating the environmental impact of urban pavements by utilizing eco-friendly materials, promoting recycling techniques, and developing strategies for carbon reduction throughout the pavement lifecycle.

We lead one of the largest research networks for the road of the future:

8 Countries (3 continents)

8 Universities

8 Companies

Through its training program for ten doctoral candidates and various individual research projects, CIRCOPAV seeks to create a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial, and innovative leaders. The project directly responds to key European targets such as the European Green Deal, the 2030 climate and energy framework, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to position Europe as a leader in sustainable road innovations.
